Ozone Therapy for Mastitis

ozone therapy for mastitis

Ozone therapy offers dairy farmers an effective treatment for mastitis without antibiotics — meaning no milk withdrawal, no contribution to antibiotic resistance, and suitability for organic systems.

Why consider ozone for mastitis?

Mastitis costs the dairy industry millions annually. Ozone therapy addresses key challenges:

  • No withdrawal period — treated cows’ milk can go in the tank
  • Reduced resistance risk — bacteria are far less likely to develop resistance to ozone compared to antibiotics
  • Works on resistant cases — effective where antibiotics have failed
  • Organic-compatible — suitable for antibiotic-restricted systems
  • Breaks down biofilms — reaches bacteria that antibiotics can’t

Which mastitis cases respond to ozone?

Ozone is used for:

  • Clinical mastitis — visible udder changes, clots in milk
  • Subclinical mastitis — elevated cell counts without visible signs
  • Chronic/recurrent cases — quarters that keep flaring up
  • Resistant infections — when antibiotic treatment has failed
  • Mixed infections — multiple pathogen types

Clinical Detaiil

Ozone demonstrates activity against major mastitis pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), Streptococcus uberis, Strep. agalactiae, Strep. dysgalactiae, E. coli, Klebsiella, coliforms. Effective against biofilm-forming strains. Oxidative mechanism significantly reduces resistance development risk.

How is it used?

Intramammary ozone can be administered as:

  • Ozonated water/saline — infused into the affected quarter
  • Ozone gas — insufflation via teat canal
  • Ozonated oil — provides sustained action

Treatment Protocol Example

Thorough stripping of the affected quarter to remove contaminated milk and debris.

Intramammary flushing using ozonated saline or water, or administration of ozone gas via the teat canal.

Gentle massage of the udder to help distribute the solution within the mammary gland.

Treatment is usually repeated over one or several sessions, depending on the severity and clinical response. In milder or subclinical cases, fewer treatments may be required. In some situations, ozone therapy may also be combined with regenerative therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to support tissue recovery. When antimicrobial treatment is required, ozone therapy may act synergistically with antibiotic therapy, potentially enhancing therapeutic effectiveness and supporting tissue recovery.

What results can be expected?

With ozone treatment:

  • Reduced swelling and heat within 24-48 hours
  • Improvement in milk quality (fewer clots)
  • Cell count reduction over following days
  • In the key study, 60% of ozone-treated cows achieved clinical cure without antibiotics (Ogata & Nagahata, 2000)

Chronic cases with extensive udder damage may have limited response — early treatment gives best outcomes.

Evidence

Research supports intramammary ozone:

Practical considerations

On-farm implementation:

  • Equipment — portable ozone generators available for farm use
  • Training — proper technique important for efficacy and safety
  • Record keeping — document treatments as with any intervention
  • Integration — can complement (not replace) good mastitis prevention
  • Severe cases — may still require veterinary assessment and systemic treatment

Fitting with farm assurance

Ozone supports farm goals:

  • Antibiotic reduction targets — contributes to lower farm antibiotic use
  • Retailer requirements — helps meet responsible use commitments
  • Organic certification — compatible with organic standards
  • AMR stewardship — demonstrates proactive approach to resistance
